“If you think you are enlightened, go spend a week with your family.” This quote by Ram Dass captures the bottom line of family difficulties that are so deeply rooted in the psyche. As someone with four planets in the house of family, the personal work I have undertaken in response to the often confusing and convoluted psychological conditions of my home life has been vast. If you’re reading this, it's likely that family hasn't been a walk in the park for you either. And yet part of you knows that no matter how difficult or unfair your experience has felt, the weight bearing effects of unresolved family issues can only be lifted when we do the work that is needed to loosen our emotional ties. One of the troubles with family matters is our tendency to look at them through a very personalized lens. Though understandable, subjectivity is problematic when mixed with heightened emotional states as it reinforces narratives that uphold unhelpful self-concepts. While we may have good reason to assert our misfortune, by adopting a more impersonal outlook, we find ourselves more easily able to loosen our grip on the stories that prolong our suffering.
